I had no idea there were so many different species of sparrows….the lake sure draws a variety of birds in the winter as in the summer…love your photos and identifying of them all❤️😍👍
So many sparrows of different shapes and design colors! I will confess that I haven't paid the attention the sparrow family deserves. I rarely have an opportunity to observe birds up close, except for crows, I hear them but never see them unless in flight. I'm inspired to educate myself more on 'the sparrow' now and already have discovered there is the Old World Sparrow and the New World Sparrow groups. Onward in my education thanks to you who encourages me to pay attention.
You can reshow that Dec. 21st sunrise as many times as you like! It is such a beauty!! :-) Love seeing the variety of sparrows in one post, to become more familiar with the markings of each one!!! And I love how you capture the various birds looking at you from their hiding places!!! Treasures all!!!
Good morning, Karen! An offering of beauty indeed. Your photo of the Spotted Towhee brought back a fond memory of a Towhee encounter from long ago. I was helping friends repair their deck. I kept hearing a soft “tink, tink” sound from near my VW bus which I used for such work.
As I slowly approached, there was a gorgeous, male Towhee jumping at one of my shiny, convex hubcaps…acting as a mirror? This funhouse image of itself must have seemed a threat!
Thanks for calling that encounter to mind with your photos and captions, Karen. 😁

Thank you Aunt Sharon! I had no idea until I started watching birds. Not even sure I could have picked out a sparrow!

I love that story, thank you for sharing it!
The woman of that couple, Mae, is my neighbor today! Blessings come in many forms. Connections… enduring for over four decades!
I was happy your photographs re-kindled the memory and allowed me to share it.
Thanks for sharing your wintering sparrows, Karen! It's fun to see them and compare their subtle field marks.
Thank you, Susan!
Karen plays “I spy
with my little” and long eyes,
to bud birds’ delight?
Thank you, Marisol!
a lot of hiding today!
Those sneaky birds! Thank you, Janisse!
