Hello friends! It’s been a windy, wonderful week with so many Franklin’s gulls I can’t even believe it. I’ve taken a ton of videos…which will take me forever to look through. This is a good kind of problem to have! While I dig through those, here is proof there are other kinds of birds and beauties around as well!
Lots of gull-full sunrises this week! October 17, 2023
The clouds were closing in as the sun was rising on October 19, 2023, bringing with them several thousand Franklin’s gulls! No wonder the clouds resembled a large bird!
Synchronized flying from our littlest migrant (Bonaparte’s gull) and our bigger winter resident (ring-billed gull).
It wasn’t all gulls, these three lovely Avocets made a quick stop too.
The bluebirds have been busy too, preparing for winter. This was taken just two weeks ago and already I notice the leaves aren’t that green anymore.
They look like gulls - until they dive straight into the water head first! Terns are another of my favorite birds. (Forster’s tern)

I never see this green heron until he flies away. Sorry buddy, didn’t mean to scare you off!

First year Cooper’s hawk, also known as “he who makes the other birds fly away”.
Flocks of grackles are amazing. I can’t believe the movie “The Birds” scared me as a kid - now I wouldn’t believe it!
Another of the young migrants, a first-year cormorant exploring the marina.
“One of these is not like the others…” - pied-billed grebe popped up right in the middle of the coots.
The leaves are changing now. I do love the colors of fall.

Karen, as always, your post is wonderful (unlike my whale disaster!), but that meadowlark photo is my all time favorite. Sure, I want my spirit animal to be a meadowlark. Sure, there is nothing sweeter than a meadowlark call on a quiet spring morning, but now you publish a photo of a meadowlark fighter-interceptor traveling at Mach fast, and I need one. Do you sell prints?
