Happy Earth Day! Well, at least it is when I’m writing this but not when you’re reading it - but really, isn’t every day Earth Day? After a few cold days I’m ready for some warmer winds. Saying some extra prayers that the weather coming at the end of the week brings beneficial rain, not too much, and the severe weather stays away.
Here are some moments of beauty for today:
Sunrise, April 13, 2024
A flock of pelicans made a very brief stop on the lake.
Dude, you’re awfully close! (turkey vulture)
Eagles are still working hard for their youngsters!
It really is windy! I feel for you little cardinal.
Osprey doesn’t mind the wind at all!
Blue heron buzzing the tower…I mean the photographer.
Young cormorant up close. I think only the birds who were born last year still have the gray/white coloring.
Breeding adult cormorants have these little tufts above where you might imagine their ears are.
Blue herons have extra feathers on their back and on their head during breeding season. Their fancy party clothes.
I rarely take pictures of fish, but this guy was so huge! Someone caught at 53 pound catfish from the dock where I took this around the same time.
The Franklin’s gulls are back! You might remember the huge flocks from October. So far smaller flocks, but they too have “party clothes” for the spring breeding season. Can you see the pink belly?
The Bonaparte’s gulls haven’t come in for a close-up, but they have black heads in the spring that they do not have in the fall.
The pawpaw buds always look to me like they are smiling.
