Fall equinox. Day and night of equal length. Light in balance.
Yin/Yang, a spiral dance, a vortex of change. The dragon of summer swirls around the dragon of winter.
The summer dragon is full from the harvest yet he still has fire to give, the hot days not ready to recede quite yet. Fire, storms, hail, the dragon of summer is powerful.
The winter dragon is just waking up, an occasionally yawn, lots of naps, a sleepy flight to survey his lands. He blows fog across the morning lake.
The spiral dance creates the winds that bring the birds. The spiral dance creates storms. The winds are migration, without the winds, without the dance, none of this is possible.
Small birds, large birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. So many creatures ride on those winds. How do they weather the storms? How do we?
I much prefer the calm. I wish that change could blow without the chaos, loss, and destruction.
Yet, wishing things were different than they are is a source of stress. They say allowing them to be as they are will bring ease and freedom. I’m still practicing.
Meanwhile, I do what I can with the storms and wait for the beauty that so often arrives as the storm moves away. The aftermath is a time of wonder, a time when anything can arrive.
A time when beauty just might appear right in front of your eyes…or over your head.
Thanks for reading friends! It’s been a stormy equinox here but I think it’s done for now. At least we got a lot of much needed rain. Tomorrow morning I’ll go out to see what the storm brought in!
I couldn’t figure out how to fit it into the story above - but sometimes it’s just before the storm when the surprises arrive. It’s a pattern I’ve noticed because it’s not what my mind expects. I think some birds must travel on the approaching front though I don’t know how that works! Today it was ospreys. I am always hoping they will dive close enough to me that I can actually photograph it and today it happened! So here are some photos of osprey diving and emerging with a fish!
That wasn’t the end of the story though, because when you’re a bird there are sometimes other birds who want to steal your catch. In this case, it was another osprey!
The chase provided a lot more photos though, so more to come in this week’s “drops of beauty” posts. Speaking of which, I have extended the discount offer a few more days so if you’d like to subscribe at the $18 rate you have a few more days to do so.
Thank you for reading friends! May your equinox bring gifts of joy with as few storms as possible.
You are an amazing writer, poet, and photographer. Thank you for this!
The dark morning photo is stunning Karen! So true about when wishing for things to be different we suffer. To remind ourselves to accept what is, brings us ease to be sure. 😊
