My friend comes in the early morning and sits on the rocks and sand I have washed for her in the night.
My friend walks slowly. Quietly. Careful not to disturb the mallards and pied-billed grebes near the shore.
My friend watches with a smile as the beaver does his morning survey and then sits with me as the sun rises and holds us in its warm hug.
My friend sees me on calm days when my surface is glass and I can perfectly reflect the colors the sun paints on the clouds in the sky. I hear her whisper “wow” as she photographs my best moments.
My friend sees me on rough days when the wind whips at my surface or the boats churn my current into waves and appreciates how much chaos I can absorb.
My friend sees me on busy days when thousands of migrating birds rest in my embrace. Scaups and shovelers and teal. Franklin’s gulls, cormorants and shorebirds. Taking off and landing and taking off again.
My friend sees me on cold days when ice forms at my edges and appreciates the way I cover the rocks and branches with an icy layer. We delight together as the sun and I play, creating sparkles and shimmers of light.
My friend sees the vast expanse in my center and the quiet solitude of my coves. She hears the gentle lapping and the wild crash of waves with equal acceptance.
My friend sees the mess left at my shores of trash and trampling. She doesn’t look away or pretend not to notice.
My friend sees how I nourish the trees, the birds, the deer, the herons and all who depend on my life-giving waters. She finds beauty where I haven’t noticed beauty in myself.
My friend trusts me with her secrets and shares her hopes and fears. We celebrate and cry and walk through the moments of our lives.
My friend whispers to me of her amazement, her delight, her gratitude and her sorrow. I whisper back, “you are beautiful too”.

It’s been a wonderful week to watch the sunrise! Here are a few photos from the week:
The big white duck I wrote about earlier this year has been seen in the early mornings this week too! Glad to see he’s doing ok.

This writing came out of a writing prompt suggested by Kai Siedenburg in a writing class I’m attending called, “The Nature of Writing”. You can find her wonderful poetry books and programs at Our Nature Connection. Thank you Kai!
This beautiful meditation by your "friend" has given my heart and soul some much-needed peace. Thank you for channeling her thoughts and capturing her essence with Brother Sun. What a rich relationship they have!
