Photo Drop #7

Hello friends! It’s been a rainy, cold, windy week but the sun has poked its head out a few times and the birds keep coming!

The most amazing part of the week for me was this eared grebe in breeding plumage. I’ve never seen one before in the spring and they look completely different in the fall. So amazing! I have to share several photos because I’m just awed by this little guy.

When he looks straight toward you, perhaps it’s easier to tell why he’s called “eared”

That red eye in the light!

This is his cousin, the horned grebe. He’s not quite in his full breeding plumage yet, but seeing the two together the names make a little more sense. Those feathers by the eyes are different and he has a little white tip on his bill.
