Your love of this bird has won me over! And I can see why, there is so much to love! The way they wash and slurp the worms 😆 Thank you so much for sharing the avocets with us!
I spent many a happy day in my early 20's counting avocets in South-West England. Often several hundred, occasionally over a 1000 birds. Different to the American avocet but physically similar. Don't see them as frequently anymore, but always good when I do catch sight of one.
I love this, and I also appreciate your enthusiasm for these birds. I particularly love your final paragraph.
I saw a couple long-billed curlews this past weekend when I was a few hours from home out in Central Montana. It was a joy because I don't know that I've ever seen them before. Also, plenty of sandhill cranes, which are not infrequent views for me during the summer, but no less joy-filled for their familiarity.
Thank you. That's so awesome about the curlews and sandhill cranes! I've not yet seen a curlew. Big shore birds and anything in the heron family have a special place in my heart!
Yes, as we are all works in progress. Nothing ever stays the same in Nature, always evolving. Thank you Karen for sharing your talents and knowledge of Nature, your thoughts/prospective and photography!!
I’ve never seen these birds before, but now I want to! So beautiful and the images of them washing off the worms are amazing! Thanks so much for sharing.
I think I'm going adopt the avocet as my avatar. You have introduced me to their wondrous selves. I especially love their paradoxical nature of elegant and dorky! :-)

Awesome avocet behavior! Who knew they washed their food like this? Thanks for sharing...
