It's Not Easy Being Green
June 28, 2026
It’s not easy being (a) green (heron)…
…having to spend each day climbing through the rocks and leaves
when I think it could be nicer being bigger like egrets, or something more noticeable like that.

It’s not easy being (a) green (heron), it seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things…
…and people tend to pass you over ‘cause you’re not standing out like flashy booby’s diving in the water or preening on the shore.
But green’s the color of spring, and I have gorgeous yellow feet…
…and I can dive and catch a fish…
Success!
…or stalk a waterfall, or extend my neck.
When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why…
…but, why wonder? why wonder?
I’m green and I do fine…
I’m beautiful, and I think it’s what I want to be.
Hello friends! I said last week I rarely highlight one bird, but I couldn’t help but do it again this week. In fact, I photographed this green heron the same day I photographed the brown booby. He flew in squawking, as if to say, “HEY LADY, I’M JUST AS GOOD AS THAT BROWN FOOL!” Hence, my ode to one of my favorite - and possibly the funniest - bird. I hope you enjoyed it!
With great thanks to the late Joe Raposo for his wonderful song, “Bein’ Green”. I love Kermit as much as I love green herons!)

Amazing shots of the green heron, and the running commentary had me chuckling. 👏👏👏
The photos of the heron diving are spectacular.
