I love to see wings frozen in motion when the mechanics of flight are visible, especially on larger birds. It’s a special kind of seeing where understanding how wings work only adds to the beauty of a flying bird, instead of a clinical understanding where the beauty is left out and only a lifeless relic remains. It reminds of something C.S. Lewis wrote in his book “That Hideous Strength,” about how we cannot understand a living thing simply by dissecting it:
“The very experiences of the dissecting room and the pathological laboratory were breeding a conviction that the stifling of all deep-set repugnances was the first essential for progress.”
I mean, you and me both! But I wonder if he finds a wood duck mate if he will disappear, as most wood ducks don't like to hang out in the open like mallards. Now if he mates with a mallard I'm all in for that too!
Thank you Bev! That's SO COOL about your autumn! I'm glad you were deeply enjoying it. And I kind of like this time of year when I don't have to rush to get out the door in the morning. When the light starts coming back in earnest I always feel like I'm behind - from about mid-February to mid-April!
I've named your wood duck Elton John for all his flashy attire and even the pink glasses! He definitely knows how to rock an outfit! No wonder he has groupies among the female mallards.
Your bird shots are always great, but I really like your sunrises and sunsets!
Thank you! I like them too, when the universe is cooperating to produce them.
Ah Karen. Where do you find the time?

We make time for the things we love I think. I also don't do a lot of other things! And boy do I agree with this.
Yes, we do what we love. But if we don’t,
“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”― Omar Khayyám
I do hope Mr. Wood duck finds a lady friend. Would love to see baby wood ducklings in the spring!

Thank you Patrick
Love the wood duck👍❤️😍
Thank you Sharon!
Beautiful, Karen - it's hard to pick my favorite, but the Egret looks ethereal!
We had one of the most colorful and lasting Autumns in a long time, and everyone loved it, snapping shots of their favorite trees.
I take heart when it gets so dark and remember that it's only 20 days til Midwinter (winter solstice), when the light comes back ✨
And a friend reminded me that at that point the light increases by two minutes a day, and by three minutes in mid-February 🌅.
Thank you for this 💕
