This is so cool! I'm so glad you were here for this moment and captured it for all of us! You had me at ice on the coot's back, but then those FEET! Amazing

I think often about what a hummingbird would look like if crossed with a duck. I think I finally have my answer: a tiny, web footed missile with the foot proportions of your coot.

Do you have ouzels? Those unserious little birds who play in icy rivers all winter?

Oh my gosh, those feet! And the frozen water droplets! Thank you for sharing these gloriously fun photos of your cootie friend.

The "glamour shot"--ha! Love this. Made me think there's a children's picturebook somewhere in here.... with those incredible feet!

Holy smoke, those FEET!!! I had no idea! I guess I supposed they resembled duck's feet? I never saw a coot who wasn't swimming in water before! Thanks once again, Karen, for giving me a view of nature (like robins in the snow!) that I never would have seen otherwise!!! :D

This post, which I just forwarded to a dear friend having a BAAADDDD day, made her laugh and consoled her at the same time. She really related to cootie’s isolation and courageous trek across the ice back to his tribe. Thank you for a delightful montage that had hidden healing properties! ❤️🙏

Thanks, Karen, for this delightful post. It lifted my day with a little joy. I needed that. We have not had any sun for several days. Bill

Thank you Uncle Bill! I needed it too, whew, this long stretch of low, gray clouds is tough.

Why no webbing is my first question? Oh, thank you internet, Coots are not ducks! No wonder he/she prefers to walk on the ice to get anywhere a bit faster. Still, just a little webbing and a coot could speed around with those swell feet! Love all of the pictures and your narrative!

That's it! They spend a fair amount of time foraging out of the water, so maybe that's why?

There are many coots near where I live and walk. I've never identified with these odd-looking birds with strange feet, but perhaps now, I will start to look at them differently.
