Yesterday felt like the first day of fall too in New England. With yesterday's birds I have started a master list so per your earlier instructions, learning them one bird at a time. An awesome task.
And re: “almost looks like fall but it’s still summer!”…..I love the way the early fading of leaves in mid-August reminds us that we have indeed moved from the 3-month “solstice season” (May Day til the August cross-quarter time), a period during which the sun remains within 10 degrees—a fist at arms-length—from its summertime midday height, as well as about the same range for sunrise and sunset points on the horizon, and so are now entering “equinox season” (early August through til All Souls time in early November), during which it all moves so much faster, with midday sun and rise/set points slipping more than 30 degrees in a similar timespan, in preparation for settling into the once again relatively-static winter solstice season from All souls til Groundhog time….
So yes, those pockets autumnal leaves are harbingers of this month of transition!
Thank you Jim! Yes we have. I notice it most by how quickly the sunrise moves back, noticible on an almost daily and certainly weekly basis. The closer to the equinox, the faster it moves. the closer to the solstice the slower it moves and sometimes not at all. Already sunrise is almost an hour earlier than mid-summer.
Awesome images Karen - especially love the Barn Swallow going in for a dive and skimming the top of the water. You've really been able to catch some excellent photos of Barn Swallows!
Such terrific pics and captions today! All in on bird gigong! Had to stretch my wings and wiggle my butt as i viewed them! :) Pretty sure that little Hummer of yours was growling in that pose!
Yes, a little fall is being felt here too. After a muggy morning, a rather fierce wind, rain and hail storm past thru flooding the streets and left us all wondering, 'What was that!?!?' With marble sized hail banked up in various places that seemed .... well unreal. A 1/2 hour later we had all blue skies and the air was sooooooooooo fresh with lovely floral fragrances.
Stretching your wings and wiggling our butt is always good for you! :) That's a crazy little storm. Might as well enjoy the aftermath if you have to weather the storm - right?
Thank you, Karen! These moments you've captured are lovely punctuations in my busy day of talking with nurses and rescheduling blood tests and doctor appointments. Lovely 'sparkles of joy and glimmers of hope.' Bless you xo
❤️😍👍 gorgeous pictures
Thank you Sharon
