Good morning Karen! I so enjoyed your observations. Words and images. As I read your comments on the beginning of full-fledged fall migration I was struck with realizing that we get to observe a moving ecosystem. Tucked into this north Florida home, Tallahassee, for some species we are their destination! Predators included, especially hawks as you mentioned. I’m grateful to have become planted here (51 years now) after my beginnings in nw Pennsylvania. Your essays help kindle further appreciation for all the members of this ecosystem we share. Grateful.

Thank you Gary. Yes, that is true, a moving ecosystem! We are both a "flyover" and a destination, in each season. Many raptors will overwinter here too.

Why are King Fishers so noisy when they fly? Most small birds are only that noisy when they want to warn of an intruder. But King Fishers remind me of a kid with a playing card pinned to his bike. Clackity-Clack-Clack! - Look At Me! 😊

You know, they are in the same family as herons and herons tend to announce their departure with a loud noise as well. Lol, I love the image of the playing card in the bike spokes, that takes me back!

Interesting. Never would have guessed they were related to herons. Perhaps this is a short bird complex announcing itself.

I had to laugh, your Kingfisher comparison to Underdog. Now this will be on repeat in my head today;

β€œThere's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" ( I am considerably older, how do you even know this cartoon?)It is also the season to watch the Kingfisher here in Vermont . You may not be familiar with this line, it is a verse taken from a song called Grantchester Meadows by Pink Floyd. One of my favorites. I have always taken notice over the years that so many lyrics from my favorite artists , were born as poems.

β€œSee the splashing Of the kingfisher flashing to the water

A river of green is sliding

Unseen beneath the trees

Laughing as it passes…”

Btw, I broke into song yesterday while hiking, β€œJust kicking down the cobblestones looking for fun and feeling groovy, Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy…”

Ha ha - I love β€œThere's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" I am old enough that Underdog was on Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid! :)

I was not familiar with the Pink Floyd lyric, but I love it! And I love that you broke into song.

Just came back from a morning hike. As expected, β€˜Underdog’s call’ came forth, out loud. I told my husband he could blame it on you😊
