Time for my standard Northern Flicker PSA: Northern Flickers have the longest tongues in the long-tongued woodpecker family. Their tongues can extend 2”-4” beyond their bill. I suspect that with proper training, they could use their tongues to pick locks.
I never knew flickers have a red heart in the back of their head/neck…great picture ….glad you got some much needed rain…we got some too…the wind was crazy….the cold front is coming thru here tonight… our last day in the 70’s today ❤️
Thank you Sharon! We've had quite a lot of rain, I'm glad you got some too. And then we got crazy winds last night and my dad has lots of branches down in his yard again. I'm going to have to get out my below freezing clothes this week.
Oh those skies! Such power and beauty. I look forward to your posts with such curiousity, eager to see what has captured your eye this week. Thank you.
Funny you mentioned three trees together, I have always thought the same. My sisters and I make three. Vastly different but our ‘sap’ is the same. I love the heart on the back of the Flicker’s head. I often thought how nice it would be if I could have a small red heart on the back of my head. So I settled for a heart sticker on the back of my ski helmet. Wonderful photographs, even with my pupils dilated ( as I sit in the optometrist office attempting to read).

I loved the photo of the red head patch.
I'd love to see a flicker pick a lock! woodpecker tongues are amazing to watch.
Beauitful images, Karen. I especially like the "one of these things is not like the others..." Pied-billed Grebe just out doing their thing. :)
Thank you Neil!

The 3rd sky shot is such a beauty. Certainly lets us know there is something bigger, that we are part of, if we will but take a moment to look.
Thank you Sandy
Love the dramatic sky pics x

Flicker envy going on this side of the pond, Karen.

The red trees in front of your home are just stunning! How lucky you are!
The red trees are my favorite today.
